Footwork at The Open Championship

On Saturday 19th July, Sammy made his way over to Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland for the 153rd Open Championships to produce our Saturday morning programme from the iconic course.

Sadly, Patrick Kielty couldn't be there, but fortunately we found another local in the form of Colin Murray to lead the show in Paddy's absence.

Thanks to the OB wizards on course, we were able to broadcast from anywhere over the entirety of the course. Our show began by the front gates where thousands of golf fans streamed in for day three of the Championships, but then we moved around various parts of the course, including a sneak peak under the ropes of the 1st hole right next to the opening pair of the day.

Other highlights of the show included:

• Dennis Taylor taking on 5 Live golf commentator James Gregg in a putt-off.

• Michelin star chef Brian McDermott sharing local Northern Irish sweet delicacies such as Auld Yellow man, Dulles and Brandy Balls with the 5 Live golf team

• Former Women's Open champion Catriona Matthew taking on 13 year old listener Jamie in a game of 'Beat The Commentator'

A fantastic experience and of course an amazing chance to watch the world's best golfers just meters away. Thanks to the team at 5Live for the wonderful opportunity.
